Neurodermatitis (atopic dermatitis)
Questions & Answers
Is neurodermatitis infectious?
No. It is a non-infectious, inflammatory skin disease that cannot be transmitted, even with intensive skin contact.
How should children be prevented from scratching?
- Working it off through physical activity
- Practice alternatives to scratching: Use 'scratch block', pressing, rubbing, brushing, stroking, pinching
- Ensure fingernails are clean and short
- Use cotton mittens at night or put on a neurodermatitis overall
- Relaxation exercises: Tell stories or play cassettes, paint, etc.
Is there a special neurodermatitis diet?
No. As a basic principle, a neurodermatitis sufferer can eat everything. It is important not to draw up diet programmes yourself, in particular, so as not to cause malnutrition in children. Only if the doctor has proven an allergy through corresponding tests is it wise and mandatory in these cases to leave out that particular food.
Is sun good for the skin?
The skin of most neurodermatitis sufferers tolerates solar radiation (UV light) well. Consequently, the dermatologist uses UV radiation treatment in many cases. It is important to use a sunscreen product with a high sun protection factor that should not contain any perfumes either if possible.
Should children with neurodermatitis participate in sports?
There is no reason why these children should not participate in sports. However, a sport should be chosen that the child likes, that he or she enjoys doing. Every form of progress should be rewarded as this gives the child confirmation and recognition. It is important to ensure that the sports clothing is soft and air-permeable so that heat accumulation can be avoided. After sports, the child should take a lukewarm bath/shower and use a care product on his or her skin.
What can parents do whose children refuse treatment?
The cause for such behaviour by the child may include:
- Lack of understanding why the treatment is necessary.
- The treatment is painful, unpleasant, or simply boring.
- Parents were not consistent in the treatment.
- Rebellious phase and power games.
If the cause can be narrowed down, a targeted approach is possible. The following are to be seen as suggestions:
- Encourage the motivation to 'do it themselves'.
- Offer alternatives.
- Integrate the applications into a game.
- Involve another person in the therapy.
- Do not develop any guilt complexes in the child and agree rewards for active 'participation'.
