Nummular eczema
Symptoms
Nummular eczema can look like or progress as follows:
- The eczema starts with small reddened spots or blisters. When the blisters burst, the typical, sharply defined, coin-shaped, approx. 5 cm large, inflamed, reddened and weeping focal points develop.
- The weeping lesions dry as the crusts form. The crusts are yellowish. Older lesions are scaly.
- The focal points can itch or even burn.
- In most cases, the disease starts on the legs/lower legs. However, the torso, in particular the upper back, and the upper arms and hands are also frequently affected.
- Sometimes, the centre of the focal points is already healing up while the edge is still very inflamed. This can make nummular eczema look very much like fungal skin infections.
- Nummular eczema can be chronic over a number of years, i.e. regularly flare up after phases of healing up.
