Hair loss

Only a dermatologist can determine the cause of hair loss and suggest a possible therapy. Hair loss should never be treated before a diagnosis has been made by a dermatologist. There are dermatologists who are specialised in hair diseases.

A visit to a doctor is recommended

  • if you detect unusual hair loss of unknown cause.
  • in order to clarify possible illnesses and deficiency symptoms.
  • if you detect circular hair loss (alopecia areata).
  • with diseases of the scalp.

If the hair bulb has died, no treatment will have any impact. If it is possible to clearly define the cause, such as e.g. hair loss in women with a hormonal cause, a specific treatment with hair tinctures containing oestrogen or pills containing anti-androgens can be prescribed.

With androgenetic hair loss caused by hormones which frequently starts with a receding hairline and then becomes a bald patch and ultimately a bald head, specific treatment is more difficult. For both forms, consistent influencing of the seborrhoea (hair becomes greasy), that also exists in most cases, using specific shampoos can be helpful. Although modern drugs (Mioxidil, Finasterid) promise new hair growth, this is then vellus hair that will not change into terminal hair.

There are also cosmetic products that promote the circulation and may have a favourable influence on the supply and nourishment of the hair.

The supply of suitable nutrients with dietary supplements or balanced 'vitamin drugs' can have a favourable effect on the hair structure if there is a nutrient deficiency (example: Gelacet gelatine capsules with biotin).
